A unique hexassarion with a very interesting rendering of Zeus
Lot 2566
IONIA. Miletus. Hadrian, 117-138. Hexassarion (Bronze, 36 mm, 26.29 g, 6 h), Rouphos, magistrate for the second time. ΑΔΡΙΑΝΟϹ ΚΑΙϹΑΡ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΟϹ Laureate head of Hadrian to right. Rev. ΜΙΛΗϹΙΩΝ•ЄΠΙ•ΡΟΥΦΟΥ•Τϕ Zeus standing front, head to right, resting his right hand on hip and holding thunderbolt in his left. BMC -. RPC III online 2142A.1 (this coin). SNG Copenhagen -. SNG von Aulock -. Apparently unique. A large and impressive issue with a very interesting reverse. A few light scratches and with minor deposits, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Eric ten Brink, acquired from Lanz on eBay on 28 July 2017.

The very particular rendering of Zeus on the reverse of this coin indicates that the artist was copying an actual statue set up in the city.
